Iceless Meat Safe

Most country homesteads before the 1950s used a meat safe and food safes similar to this one to keep meat and other perishable food.

This one used the evaporative cooling method. Hessian bagging was draped around the sides and kept moist with water from the tray on top. The safe was usually situated on a veranda where it would catch any breeze. This safe belonged to the Beddie family.
